Criterion History

Criterion Products was established in Los Angeles in 1951 as a 3-man operation specializing in folding gates and security bars for custom window and door protection. Originally known as Criterion Welding and Manufacturing Company, it quickly developed a reputation for quality and service. By 1960, the newly named Criterion Gate and Manufacturing Company had expanded into a new facility producing three series of folding gate products.

During the decades that followed, Criterion developed an impressive clientele, ranging from well-known national retailers to local small businesses that shared the same needs for storefront security.

Industrial facilities, hotels, amusement parks, banks, school districts and other public works related authorities were among those that found Criterion folding gates could meet their varying needs for opening protection.

As retail development flourished in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Criterion was at the forefront of the storefront boom. Folding gates from that era – some over 100 ft. wide – are still in use today. Many stores have changed owners since then – but not their Criterion gates!

As its customer base grew and distribution expanded, so did opportunities for new products. Criterion added to its product line with a variety of products for the trucking industry. Collapsible truck-mounted step ladders, truck and dock bumpers, cargo door hinges and stake pockets were a few of the additions. Chain gate closures commonly utilized on truck trailers became another part of the gate product line. Several types of canvas and PVC tarp products – including, flat, custom-fitted, and operable curtains and screens – were also developed as complimentary products.

Even though the truck hardware line is no longer offered, chain gates and tarp products – including environmental curtains and welding screens – are still available today as a supplement to the folding gate product line.

Lawrence Roll-Up Doors, Inc. acquired the assets of Criterion Gate and Manufacturing in 2000. The new enterprise became Criterion Products, Inc. but was subsequently brought under the Lawrence umbrella and was known simply as Criterion Products. In 2004, Lawrence consolidated all door and gate manufacturing operations into a new facility located in Baldwin Park, California.  Today, all products are sold under the Lawrence Doors name.
