Lawrence Roll-Up Doors, INC.
Lawrence Roll-Up Doors started business in 1925 as The Lawrence Glass Company, a Los Angeles manufacturer of steel sash products. In the next few years, as the window industry changed and the demand for steel sash diminished, the company diversified, became known as The Lawrence Steel Company, and transitioned into a manufacturer of roll-up doors.
Even in its early years, large projects – with large doors – became a common occurrence. An example of early successes was the Matson Terminal project, which included 89 doors of various sizes up to 40 ft. wide.
In 1948, Lawrence became one of the first manufacturers to have a roll-up fire door tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratories. Today, Lawrence provides state-of-the-art fire and smoke control door products – including some of the largest sizes available in the industry.
Unique designs and signature features have been a Lawrence hallmark throughout the years. Gear sets that are field adjustable for optimal meshing, and 1-piece formed U-channel guides with integral windlock bars for simplicity and consistency, were introduced decades ago and are still design features of many current Lawrence products.
After eventually becoming The Lawrence Company, it was incorporated in 1988 as Lawrence Roll-Up Doors, Inc. Lawrence acquired the assets of Criterion Gate in 2000, the assets of Pacific Rolling Door in 2008, and AlumaTek assets in 2010. Lawrence Roll-Up Doors, Inc. continues to operate as a third-generation family business.
Custom products to comply with special design requirements emphasize the magnitude of Lawrence engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Very large doors with dimensions of 60 ft. or more, doors with inverted operation that roll down to open, doors for unusual openings that are irregular, inclined or curved are some examples.
Lawrence was a charter member of the American Rolling Door Institute, and today continues to actively participate in industry associations and standards organizations. Continual innovations, progressive ideas, a commitment to quality, and development of new products has positioned Lawrence as an industry leader.
After decades of growth and expansion through the use of multiple buildings on the original Lawrence property in Los Angeles, and with another site for the Criterion folding gate operation, in 2004 Lawrence consolidated all manufacturing operations into a new facility located in Baldwin Park, California.
Today, operations and product line expansion continue. Lawrence innovations have resulted in new patented designs. Several industry firsts have been introduced, including the first high performance grille, and the first egressible grille and door products on the market offering both fail safe and fail secure functions.
